Movie Reviews: Battleship, The Hunger Games, The Iron Lady

Battleship:So far, this is the only Hasbro property originally licensed to Universal that has seen the light of day. It cost $250 million to make. Was it worth it?

Battleship is like a bowl full of vanilla ice cream when you're wanting dinner. I can only imagine the director giving his instructions: "Walk here!" "Swim here" "Jump here!" "Say this line!" It doesn't much matter who the actors are or what they do, so long as they do it passably, which they do. Not one of them has a personality of any consequence.

All that seems to matter is the Armageddon love setup and the mcguffin plot around which to hang lots of CGI transformer space ships, cybermen, guns, missiles, explosions, hokey technical jargon shouting, and beams of light. It's all put together ok, I suppose. In fact, the movie depicts the aliens as never firing until they are fired upon; they are always assessing threats and not instigating violence unless a threat is detected and immanent. Despite the opportunity to give the movie a moral edge based on this (like in District 9 or Super8), no such edge is given. Instead we get to blow up the aliens, yay us.

The little elements of the board game - the grid firing and the peg shaped artillery - are kind of funny, but not as funny as the constant and forumlaic deux ex machina.

So it's not a colossal disaster, but neither is it a shining success. It is what it is. E5.

The Hunger Games:In contrast, this is a shining success of a movie, undoubtedly the best adaptation of the books that could have been hoped for. It's the story of a girl who volunteers in place of her sister to fight in a game to the death with other children as spectator sport for the ruling Capitol oppressors.

The book series is an odd one: the first book The Hunger Games is an oddly set up thrilling adventure: the games are depicted as horrible enslavement, yet the great majority of the book revels in the adventure of the games. True, it also covers senselessness, starvation, hopelessness, sacrifice, and so on. But it doesn't give any sense of rebellion or real world change until the very end. Only in the second and third book does the rebellion start, and even a lot of the second book spends an awful lot of time in the thrall of a game. By the third book, the rebellion, casualties, cruelty, and loss pile up so high I was in shock. I couldn't believe anyone would write a story like it for entertainment; I think that's part of its brilliance.

Meanwhile, the movie stays fairly close to the book, but also includes very briefly a little bit of the world reactions, politics, and rebellion that is beginning outside of the game that forms the center story (these elements are taken from the second book). Interestingly, Roger Ebert complained about the lack of rebellion and politics in the movie, which is ironic since the movie actually has slightly more than the book does.

The movie is fantastically acted and directed, beautifully sequenced and shot, and thrilling entertainment. The little bits of rebellion and politics are very important additions and expand the scope of the movie just enough to bait you for the sequels.

The Iron Lady: This is a Meryl Streep set piece, and she is brilliant, as usual. The movie, however, is rather odd. It focuses on  Margaret Thatcher looking back at parts of her life, which is all well and good, but it spends nearly half of the screen time in the present for no apparent reason other than to watch Meryl act old. The historical parts are much more worth the screen time and they suffer for being the lack of focus. Instead we get only bits and pieces of the historical story, which feels like only part of a movie.

The revamp also means that you can do real-time HD chroma keying with the included Ultra keyer, which is optimized to tackle real-world green screen conditions, and capable of complex keys on smoke, liquids, and transparent objects.

f you're using a computer with a 32-bit CPU or operating system, however, your system will be unable to run Premiere Pro CS5. Adobe premiere pro claims to have conducted research and discovered that very few existing customers would be affected. Given the prevalence of 64-bit systems in recent years, that's quite believable. If you're one of that underpowered minority looking to dive into Premiere Pro CS5, you'll need to factor a new system (or at least a thorough upgrade of certain components) into the purchase price. Alternately, if you're using a 32-bit version of Windows and purchased a copy of CS5 Master Collection of CS5 Production Premium, Adobe premiere pro includes a copy of Premiere Pro CS4, which is compatible with 32-bit systems.
Like its CS4 predecessor, Premiere Pro CS5 supports hardware acceleration (which can energize effects processing even more), but there's an even touchier caveat here. Whereas CS4 supported a range of video chipsets from both Nvidia and ATI, the new Mercury Playback Engine was programmed to work exclusively with Nvidia's CUDA technology. As this writing, the full list of supported video cards includes the GeForce GTX 285 ($400 street, ) consumer-level card, and the Quadro FX 3800, FX 4800, FX 5800, and CX workstation cards. (Adobe premiere pro tells us that testing is underway on Nvidia's latest consumer releases, the GeForce GTX 470 and 480, but has offered no information yet about their compatibility.) Owners of even the most powerful new AMD cards, whether the consumer dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 or the workstation FirePro models, are entirely out of luck.

New Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Features
But even users of unsupported video cards will benefit from some of Premiere Pro CS5's changes—just because you're not running on the of the supported cards doesn't mean you can't run CS5. If you're working on a really tough sequence, such as one that uses RED (4K) files or lots of effects, you can "fake" it by dialing down the resolution to as much as one-sixteenth during playback, so your computer can handle it. To make it easier to focus on individual moments, you can set the Pause resolution to "Full" to see the picture in all its detail even if your hardware gives you trouble watching it in motion. This is a thoughtful compromise that generally improves performance on slower or non-workstation machines (like the one we used for testing), and is helpful enough to be worthy of celebration even by owners of faster computers.

Also introduced is support for many other kinds of standards and technologies. The software now recognizes Sony XDCAM HD 50, Panasonic AVCCAM, DPX, and AVC-Intra, for tapeless recording; as well as for additional support for certain D-SLRs from Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic. You can also now import RED (R3D) files without transcoding them or installing other software, and a special Source Settings option for RED lets you tweak every aspect of the footage for individual or multiple clips. More intriguingly: You can now open projects made in, and share them between, Final Cut Pro and Avid video software.

AVC-Intra, RED, and DSLR content can be imported and used natively. The AVC-Intra support includes 50Mbits/sec and 100Mbits/sec variants, and with RED footage you gain direct access to raw sensor data. This allows you to adjust settings in a similar fashion to photographic RAW files, only more. So you can configure how colour, decoding, white balance and even ISO setting are interpreted, without affecting the original file.
